Though without doubt, the best episode is the almost meta “Strange Meeting", where Ulysses and co. Other stalwarts of Greek myth, such as Theseus and the Minotaur and the riddle of the Sphinx, are the subject of episodes. Thus Ulysses, Telemachus, Yumi and Nono the little red robot are forced to roam the stars.Įach of the major points in The Odyssey are touched upon the drug-added Lotus Eaters, the sorceresses Circe and Calypso, the lure of the Sirens, and the twin dangers of Scylla Charybdis. Furthermore, they curse the companions to remain “as lifeless as stone”, left floating in suspended animation until the Gods’ cruel justice is satisfied. But vengeful are the Gods of Olympus, who cast Ulysses and his companions into the Kingdom of Hades, a strange and distant galaxy. In rescuing Telemachus and the trapped blue aliens from the planet Zotra, Yumi and Numinor, Ulysses destroys the Cyclops. Departing aboard his ship, The Odyssey, with his son Telemachus and his crew, Ulysses encounters the Cyclops, in this case a strange machine god whose followers abduct children to drain their life force. The story begins on the space station Troy, which is unsubtly designed like a gigantic hoplite helmet. When we say Ulysses 31 is an adaptation of The Odyssey, it’s fair to say that it is a loose adaptation.

Written by Jean Chalopin, an early pilot was more traditionally anime, but the series that we know has a strong blend of Japanese and French animation styles, and draws upon the design of ancient Greece for its look. Ī French-Japanese production, it’s proper name is either Ulysse 31 or Uchu Densetsu Yurishizu Satiwan ( Space Legend Ulysses 31). Why? Cause of Ulysses 31, a sci-fi take on Homer’s epic The Odyssey.
And it has to be followed with " No-one else can do the things you do". If you grew up in the 1980s (or you have Toonami), you don't pronounce Ulysses with three syllables rather you do it with seven.
